About this Opportunity
Brunswick County Department of Social Services is accepting applications for a Social Worker I in our Child Protective Services unit and our Permanency Planning/Foster Care unit. We are a forward-thinking, creative organization that truly believes in treating others as we want to be treated and we are looking for the right person to join our Team. A Permanency Planning Social Worker I works with and supports at-risk families and performs intensive visitation services focused on promoting positive parent/child interaction, bonding and attachment.  The visitation worker implements activities with parents that promote healthy childhood growth and development while assessing the ongoing needs of families. Job responsibilities include:
  • Supervising visits between children and parents
  • Transporting children and parents to supervised visits
  • Transporting children to doctor and dentist appointments
  • Referring families to appropriate community resources
  • Documenting visits and all interactions with families
  • Participating in team meetings and discussions
  • Testifying in court
  • Providing any additional support services needed by supervisors or children's services workers
Child Protective Services Social Worker I works in a supportive role in tandem with the Child Protective Services Assessment/Investigation Social Worker III to assist in all case activities intended to assess child safety concerns and meet required timeframes, and state standards. In collaboration with Social Worker III, a determination will be made before the case decision if there is a need to continue to provide ongoing services to help reduce risk to children and ensure child safety. Job responsibilities include:
  • Accompanying Child Protective Services SW III on home visits
  • Transporting parents to appointments and drug screens as needed
  • Completing collateral contacts
  • Requesting and reviewing records
  • Referring families to appropriate community resources
  • Documenting visits and all interactions with families
  • Completing mandated forms
  • Participating in team meetings and discussions
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of basic social work practices and principles (particularly strengths-based)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Communication skills (oral and written)
  • Organizational skills
  • Critical thinking skills
Must be available to work during emergency situations.Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a human service field; or
  • Bachelor’s Degree plus one year directly related experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate a variety of office equipment.  Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
