Job Description

Description of Work To identify protection needs of abused, neglected, and exploited disabled adults and the abuse and neglect of children through the collection of information from the reporting public using a structured questionnaire along with data entry into NC FAST.  This position is responsible for: daily Adult Protective Services (APS) and Child Protective Services (CPS) intake during normal business hours;  assistance with case record preparation; conducting civil and criminal background checks using State approved databases; coordination of supervised visitation for children in the legal custody of the department; providing case background information to social work staff based on knowledge of intake reports; and provide necessary support to other social work staff as needed.   This position serves families, children, and adults of Macon County which may include citizens that are mentally ill; belligerant and/or under the influence of drugs /alcohol.  Adult and child welfare intake duties are primarily assigned to this position.  Intake referrals to this position may be received from the general community, from school personnel, from mental health professionals, from other child and family serving agencies, or from within the department.   Minimum Education and Experience for Social Worker II Considerable knowledge of social work principles, techniques, and practices and their application to individual casework group work and community problems. Knowledge of the psychosocial, socioeconomic and behavioral problems and their treatment. Knowledge of governmental and private organizations and community resources. Knowledge of laws, regulations and policies which govern the program. General knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes and their treatment is required in certain programs or settings. Skill in establishing rapport with a client and applying techniques of assessing psychosocial, behavioral, and psychological aspects of client's problem. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrative superiors, members of case load and their families, and with civic, medical, social, and religious organizations. Ability to train or instruct lower-level social workers, students, or interns. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely and to plan and execute work.  

Minimum Training and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution; bachelor's degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of directly related experience; bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and two years directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.   First preference will be given to applicants who meet minimum education and experience requirments and who have completed the North Carolina Child Welfare Pre-Service Training Curriculum or applicants who meet minimum education and experience and who have completed the Child Welfare Services in NC for BSW Students course.    A TRANSCRIPT OF THE HIGHEST DEGREE OBTAINED IS REQUIRED.   PLEASE NOTE – If you are applying for a position with Macon County Department of Social Services, please be aware there is a skills assessment to be completed as part of the application process.  Please contact NCWorks Macon County for more information.   SELECTION PROCEDURES:  A screening committee will review applications to select the best qualified applicants to be interviewed.   HOW TO APPLY:  A completed State of NC Application PD-107 (https://maconnc.org/images/PD107-7%20fillable%201323.pdf ) and, if needed, PD-107 Continuation Sheet must be submitted to NC Works at 5 West Main Street, Franklin, NC 28734.
