Job Description

The Scotland County Department of Social Services works to improve the wellbeing and safety of citizens' lives.  As a part of the DSS team you will work with others who value Respect, Teamwork, Dependability, Accountability, Innovation, and Excellence.  The Department provides flexible work scheduling and a full benefits package including medical insurance, vacation and sick leave, paid holidays, and membership in the North Carolina retirement system. *May be eligible for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.   PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:  
  • Provides voluntary, advanced, professional level casework for adults identified with substance abuse concerns.
  • Evaluates available information to determine the appropriateness for participation and the level of services required.
  •  Identifies, explores, and utilizes community resources available from public and private agencies to best assist clients.
  • Attend and/or facilitate meetings as an advocate for clients to maintain open communication between the client, family, and other community supports/systems.
  • Works regularly in the field conducting home visits, facility visits, etc. and must contact collateral sources to obtain additional information needed to gather information about adults and families.
  • Maintain current knowledge of resources available from public and private agencies.  All information is used in accordance with program policy and to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those served.
  • Ensure all program guidelines and policies are completed accurately and timely.
  • Completes and/or inputs  intake referrals, assessments, status reports, service agreements, medical records and financial documentation.
  • Distribute Narcan to those clients meeting the program criteria for dispensal.
  • Gathers information to identify participants’ risks and needs.
  • Establishes appropriate service/treatment plans.
  • Prepares and maintains ongoing documentation of workload activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, which may include shelter duty.

  • General knowledge of policies, procedures, rules, state and federal law as related to governmental operations;
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret rules, regulations and procedures;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, administrative officials, other professionals, and the general public;
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to analyze, prioritize, plan, and execute work timely and accurately;
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely and to plan and executive work effectively;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with participants, administrative officials, and the general public;
  • Basic knowledge and/or ability to learn use of office equipment, software systems, internet based programs.
 

Typical Qualifications

  PREFERRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of social work;
  • Or, bachelor's degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of directly related experience;
  • Or, bachelor’s from a four-year college or university and two years of experience;
  • Or, an equivalent combination of training and experience;
  • And, the successful candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
