Deputy Director of Human Services

GRADE: 79 SALARY: Beginning at $68,532/year with full benefits package DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Provides executive leadership to staff and oversight of programs within Sampson County Department of Social Services (SCDSS). Provides direct supervision to agency leadership within the Adult and Family Services Unit (Adult Protective Services and Family Services), the Foster Care and Permanency Planning Unit, the Child Protective Services Unit, and the Child Support Unit. Provides indirect oversight to all other agency programs and of all other agency leadership in the absence of the agency Director. Works closely with state leaders/consultants to ensure high level quality assurance and state/federal policy compliance for Adult and Child social work and child support programs. Serves as an actively engaged member of the agency executive leadership team. Responsibilities include evaluating the quality of services, assessing staff training, and ensuring compliance with standards. Provides major input on organizational changes, and budget issues. Duties may include development of alternate sources of funding, interagency agreements and contracts. Individuals in this position may be instructed by the agency director to serve on local and state planning committees and policy review groups. Must possess computer skills and high-level communication skills. Must have a valid driver's license. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Through knowledge of principles, methods, and techniques of efficient administration, including interpersonal communication, personnel administration, budgeting, accounting, planning, program evaluation, and office management. Through knowledge of human services administration. General knowledge of social, mental and economic factors of the community served. Ability to plan, evaluate, coordinate and direct a staff of technical, professional and paraprofessional personnel. Ability to interpret and apply laws and policies to specific problems relating to agency activities. Considerable knowledge of social work principles, techniques, and practices and their application to casework problems. Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of public and business administration. Considerable knowledge of the organizational structure of state and local governmental and volunteer agencies. Considerable knowledge of social and economic factors and problems existing in the community. Ability to direct and supervise a staff of employees engaged in a variety of social work activities. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with agency personnel, county officials, medical, legal, civic, and religious organizations and general public. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Master's degree in public administration, social work or human services field and two years of management experience in a human services agency or social work with a preference for one year of management experience in a human services agency; or, graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a human services, social work, or related degree and four years of management experience in a human services agency or business with a preference for two years of management experience in a human services agency.
