About this Opportunity
Social Worker III - Kinship Navigator's primary responsibility is to connect children in the custody of the Department with relatives and fictive kin for the purpose of possible placement and/or support.   This position promotes supporting and nurturing long-term relationships in permanent families.  This role helps identify and locate family support, provides foster home licensing training as appropriate, provides ongoing support to relative/kinship placements, and assists social workers with child placements. Job responsibilities include:
  • Assists with the identification, location, and engagement of family/kinship supports for children in DSS custody.
  • Links relative/fictive kin placement providers to community resources to help support placements.
  • Provides Deciding Together Training for relative/fictive kin providers and completes licensing applications and ensures all paperwork is completed.
  • Makes regular home visits/community visits with relative/kinship providers and child(ren)
  • Organizes and facilitates relative/fictive kin support group meetings and training at least 4 times per year.
  • Assesses child safety and risk on an ongoing basis.
  • Completes timely, concise, detailed documentation.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of child welfare policies and legal mandates
  • Knowledge of social work and practices and principles (particularly strengths-based)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Assessments Skills
  • Communication skills (oral and written)
  • Organizational skills
  • Critical thinking skills
There will be a significant amount of time spent in family homes and in the community.  Must be available to work during emergency situations.Education and Experience
  • Master's degree in social work from an accredited school of social work; or
  • Bachelor's degree in social work from an accredited school of social work and completion of the Child Welfare Collaborative (Child Welfare positions only); or
  • Bachelor's degree in social work from an accredited school of social work and one year directly related experience; or
  • Master's degree in a human services field and one year of directly related experience; or
  • Bachelor's degree in a human services field from an accredited college or university and two years directly related experience; or
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and three years of directly related experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Must be physically able to operate a variety of office equipment.  Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pound of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
