General Definition of Work
Performs intermediate semiskilled work cleaning, maintaining and securing County buildings, grounds and facilities, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of Health and Human Services Supervisors.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: |
Essential Functions
Cleans and disinfects restrooms in County buildings; replenishes paper supplies and soap as necessary; cleans break rooms including tables and floors; cleans and sanitizes drinking fountains.
Sweeps and vacuums assigned areas and rooms; mops floors; spot cleans carpets as needed.
Removes trash from rooms and buildings and puts in dumpster; removes recycling from rooms and buildings and places in appropriate receptacles; washes and disinfects waste bins as needed.
Dusts furniture, walls, window sills and other woodwork; cleans and dusts window blinds; removes cobwebs as needed.
Performs basic landscaping maintenance duties such as picking up trash, leaves and debris and cleaning sidewalks.
Cleans glass doors, windows and partitions.
Performs building security; patrols buildings; secures buildings at closing; opens buildings as needed.
Oversees the work of custodial contract workers as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment and ability to use them economically and efficiently; ability to understand oral and written directions; ability to read and write; physical ability to perform heavy manual work; ability to work independently; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: |
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in custodial work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Note: In accordance with State mandates and the Rockingham County Emergency Operations Plan, Rockingham County Health and Human Services staff from the Divisions of Social Services, Public Health and Integrated Health are required to staff emergency shelters during times of disaster. Please be advised that every staff person is eligible to be assigned to an emergency shelter or Emergency Operations Center. |
